# Applications

Not sure what you can automate at home? Open Solutions, install a ready-made setup in a few clicks, then order the devices it lists and switch to real sensors.

Not sure what your home can do for you, or where to begin? Solutions are made for exactly that.

Go to **Applications** in the left sidebar and open the **Solutions** tab. You see the setups we have prepared: keeping an eye on a rental while you are away, a heads-up the second a pipe leaks, lights you can switch off from anywhere, noise monitoring for parties without spying on anyone, and more. New ones arrive with every update.

Doing any of these yourself takes work. You pick sensors, build a dashboard, write automations, and set up alerts. If you have never done any of that, it can feel like a lot.

So we did the work for you. Choose **Preview** on a solution, then **Use this solution**, then **Install solution** on the next screen. The solution appears in your account with practice sensors, which are sample sensors that send made-up readings. You can see how the dashboard looks, how the automations are built, and how the alerts reach you. It all works right away, and you can change any part of it. Alerts come to you by default; add family members or other ways to be notified, such as email, SMS, or push, before you count on them. Because you begin with a setup that already works, you pick up how it all fits together and where everything lives.

And if it is just what you were after, the solution lists the devices you need to buy. Order them, and once they arrive, swap the practice sensors for the real ones. You can make the swap yourself, or Chirp's [AI chat](/ai-assistant.md) can connect them for you. All you need is each device's ID, which is usually printed on its label or in its manual. After that, your setup runs on real readings. [How do I move from practice sensors to real ones?](/applications/from-practice-sensors-to-real-ones.md)

## How is a solution different from an application?

A **solution** is the finished template we prepared for you. An **application** is what sits in your account once you install one, with its sensors, dashboard, automations, and alerts in one place. You can also build an application yourself, from nothing. After the install it is a normal application, and you can edit all of it. [Solutions and applications in more detail.](/applications/solutions-explained.md)

## What do the words in Chirp mean?

* **Dashboard:** a screen with live charts and numbers.
* **Sensor:** a small device that measures something at home, such as temperature, water, or motion, and sends readings to Chirp.
* **Practice sensor:** a sample sensor that sends made-up readings. Some screens call it an emulated device or the Emulator. It counts toward your plan's device limit.
* **Automation:** a rule that reacts to a reading, such as "if the basement gets wet, send me an alert".
* **Alert:** the notification that tells you something needs attention. Some screens call it an alarm. An automation decides when it goes off.
* **Connector:** the link that brings a real sensor's readings into Chirp, for example LoRaWAN or MQTT.
* **Organization:** your Chirp account space. At home, that is you and the people who share your setup.

## How do I get started with solutions?

1. In the left sidebar, choose **Applications**. The **Solutions** tab is the one to start on.
2. [Look through the solutions](/applications/exploring-ready-made-solutions.md) until one fits your situation.
3. [Install it](/applications/installing-a-ready-made-solution.md): **Preview**, then **Use this solution**, then **Install solution**. The next screen lists what gets created and the devices you will need.
4. Order those devices. Once they arrive, [replace the practice sensors with real ones](/applications/from-practice-sensors-to-real-ones.md).

## Can I create an application myself?

Yes. Maybe no solution matches your home, or you already own sensors and want everything for one job together. It takes more work than installing a solution, so if you are new, install one first and study how it is put together.

1. [Create an application](/applications/creating-an-application.md) and name it, for example Home Watch.
2. Set up its [sensors](/devices/adding-sensors.md), a [dashboard](/dashboards/building-a-dashboard.md), [automations](/rules-engine/your-first-automation.md), and [alerts](/alarm/set-up-a-home-alert.md) the way you normally would.
3. [Add each one to the application](/applications/organizing-content.md): open the item and choose your application in its **Application** field. Then check that the automation points to the right sensor and alert, because sharing an application does not connect them.
4. Go to **Applications → My applications**, open your application, and use **Dashboard** to see its views or **Content** to see the sensors, automations, and alerts inside. A new application is empty until you add things.

An application can hold several dashboards; see [Using application dashboards](/applications/using-application-dashboards.md). It belongs to your current organization. Seeing or changing what is inside still depends on your permissions, and filing something under an application does not open it up to anyone. Deleting an application also deletes what is inside it, so [see what deletion removes](/applications/deleting-an-application.md) first. Can't find **Applications** in the sidebar? The feature may not be switched on for your account yet; see [Get Help](/get-help.md).
